How to Renew or Extend Your eVisa

What happens when your eVisa is about to expire and you are not ready to leave? The answer depends entirely on your destination. Some countries allow in-country extensions. Others require you to leave and reapply. A few offer automatic extensions under certain circumstances. This guide explains your options and walks through the extension and renewal process for the most common eVisa destinations.

Comment nous avons validé ces étapes

Chaque étape de ce guide a été vérifiée en complétant une demande en direct sur le portail gouvernemental concerné ou le service tiers. Les captures d'écran sont vérifiées par rapport aux portails actuels au moment de la publication.

  1. 1

Check if your destination allows extensions

Before trying to extend, confirm whether your destination country allows eVisa extensions for your visa type. Australia's eVisitor cannot be extended — you must leave and reapply. Sri Lanka's ETA can be extended up to 6 months by visiting the Department of Immigration. Indonesia's eVOA can be extended once for 30 days. The UAE allows one extension per visa. Check official government sources for current rules.

  2. 2

Start the extension process before expiry

Do not wait until your visa has expired to apply for an extension — overstaying even one day is a violation. Start the extension process at least 2 weeks before your visa expiry date. Some immigration offices in popular tourist destinations have long queues during peak season.

  3. 3

    Gather extension documents

Extension applications typically require: your current valid passport, a completed extension application form (from the immigration office or portal), payment of the extension fee, proof of accommodation for the extended period, evidence of sufficient funds, and sometimes a letter explaining why you need to extend your stay. Check destination-specific requirements.

  4. 4

    Submit your extension application

Depending on the country, extensions are handled either online (some countries have digital extension portals) or in person at the local immigration office. Sri Lanka, for example, requires an in-person visit. Indonesia has an online extension system. Follow the official process precisely — using unofficial "agents" for visa extensions can create legal complications.

  5. 5

Understand exit and re-entry as an alternative

In many cases, the simplest way to "renew" an eVisa is to leave the country and reapply from abroad. For short-stay visas (Turkey, USA ESTA, Vietnam), a brief trip to a neighbouring country and immediate reapplication can be cost-effective if the fees are low. However, some countries track frequent border crossings and may question the purpose of your visit.

Questions fréquemment posées

What happens if I overstay my eVisa?+
Overstaying is a serious visa violation. Consequences can include: on-the-spot fines at the airport, detention, deportation at your own expense, and a ban on future visits ranging from 1 year to permanent. If you realise you are about to overstay, contact the local immigration authority immediately — it is better to come forward than to be caught at the airport.
Can I extend a US ESTA?+
No. The ESTA itself cannot be extended, and it determines how long you can stay (90 days per visit). If you need more time in the USA, you must leave before your authorised stay expires and reapply for a new visit, or apply for a B-1/B-2 visitor visa which allows longer stays and can be extended.
Can I switch to a different visa while abroad?+
In some countries, yes — this is called a "change of status." In the USA, for example, you can apply to change from tourist to student status without leaving. Rules vary significantly by country. Consult an immigration lawyer or the official immigration authority for your specific situation.
