The UK ETA is required for nationals of countries that previously entered the UK without any prior permission — including citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, the EU/EEA, Japan, South Korea, and many others. UK citizens, Irish citizens, and those with existing UK visas are exempt. Check the official gov.uk website for the definitive list.
Does the UK ETA replace the need for a UK visa?+
No. The UK ETA is only for nationalities that were previously visa-free. If your nationality required a UK visa before the ETA system was introduced, you still need a full UK visa — not an ETA.
