What is an eVisa? Complete Guide 2026

An electronic visa — or eVisa — is a digital travel authorisation issued by a government and electronically linked to your passport. Unlike traditional visas that require embassy visits and physical stickers in your passport, eVisas are issued online and verified at immigration checkpoints via computer. They represent a major shift in how governments manage international travel, and understanding how they work will make your travel planning significantly easier.

Our methodology for this guide

eVisa and ETA information in this guide is drawn from official government sources, immigration authority websites, and IATA travel information systems. We cross-reference multiple sources for each destination and note the date of last verification. Visa requirements can change without notice — always confirm with official sources before travelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to print my eVisa?+
It depends on the country. Some eVisas — like Australia's eVisitor — are entirely electronic and require no printout. Others — like India's e-Visa — require you to present a printed copy at immigration. Always check the specific requirements for your destination.
How do immigration officers check an eVisa?+
Immigration officers scan your passport at the border checkpoint. The eVisa linked to your passport number appears on their screen. They can see your authorisation, validity dates, and any conditions. No physical visa is needed.
Can my eVisa be rejected at the border?+
Having an approved eVisa does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers can still refuse entry if they have concerns about your intentions, documents, or eligibility. Always carry supporting documents (return ticket, proof of accommodation, financial means) to show at immigration.
What happens if I overstay my eVisa?+
Overstaying a visa is a serious issue. Consequences can include fines, detention, deportation, and being banned from future visits. If you need more time in a country, apply for an extension before your current visa expires.
