The good news is that many countries offer special exemptions for cruise passengers in transit. The bad news is that the rules differ by country, cruise line, and your nationality. This guide covers what you need to know for the world's most popular cruise itineraries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cruise passengers need a visa for each port of call?+
It depends on your nationality and the destination country. Some countries waive visa requirements for cruise passengers who stay in the port area and do not clear immigration (transit status). Others — notably India, Australia, and the USA — require full visas even for cruise passengers. Always check requirements for each port well before your cruise departure.
Does the USA require a visa for cruise passengers?+
Yes. The USA does not waive visa requirements for cruise passengers. If your cruise calls at a US port and you go ashore, you must have a valid ESTA (if from a VWP country) or a B-2 visitor visa. Passengers who remain on the ship at US ports do not need a visa.
What is a C-1/D crew visa and do cruise passengers need one?+
A C-1/D visa is a US transit/crewmember visa. Passengers do not need this — it's for crew members. Passengers need either an ESTA or B-2 visa. However, if your nationality is not on the VWP list, you must obtain a B-2 visa regardless of how long you spend at US ports.
